The Platform
A Stronger Future for Meaford
Agriculture
We must protect and enhance our agricultural industry. In light of recent tariffs this will become even more important in maintaining our food security. Much of our infrastructure will have to be improved - roads, bridges, ditches and culverts for example. I will stand up for this.
Tourism
Tourism is a major industry in the area. We must have a clear, concise vision of what Meaford wants and we need to create a pathway for success for those already established in the tourism sector and those starting out.
Retail
Retail is a major part of tourism and also very important to the health of our economy in the jobs it provides and of our community in the goods and services our citizens can access. As development increases, we need to decide if we are going to be a bedroom community or if we are going to support and grow our own local retail trade.
The Military
Our army training centre is said to be a premier training facility nationally. Council has made great inroads in working with the base. We need to build upon this partnership and make clear that we value its presence.
Waterfront
Our community is blessed with a huge amount of waterfront. It's truly incredible! The entire waterfront must be protected which includes the harbours, the parks and the water itself. Residential, industrial and commercial development MUST be compatible.
Development
It is important for Council to remove unnecessary roadblocks to development. Overall, developers complain about the difficulty and delays in development, both rurally and in the downtown. I hear over and over again from small and larger developers that there are too many roadblocks, too many expensive delays - some extending work by years. We need to look at what these roadblocks are and how to speed up the process.
The Candidate
Meet Jim McPherson
My name is Jim McPherson. I am seeking the position of Municipal Councillor. I am running on experience and integrity. Integrity that has been proven reliable and trustworthy in the time I served on Meaford Municipal Council from 2006 to 2010. My education includes a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University and a Masters in Public Policy and Administration from Concordia University. I worked in Health at the Montreal General Hospital and later in education at the Quebec Ministry of Education as a policy analyst. I worked in Alberta and across Canada as a fundraiser and organizer. In Calgary, I started a land development company which I sold in 2003. My wife and I moved to Meaford that same year and started the Earth Harvest Cafe in downtown Meaford. We also had the great privilege of starting our family, having two glorious sons, Jeffrey in 2004 and Edmund in 2008. We closed the cafe in 2016. I presently enjoy driving children to and from school as a school bus driver. I look forward to serving you on Council as your representative in this wonderful municipality I love and enjoy.
